Project Statement:

“University of the Universe” explores spirituality, cultural heritage, and personal growth through Lakota Sundance philosophy. A series of seven ledger art pieces captures my experiences of witnessing Crow Dog’s Paradise Sundance, offering perspectives on a supporter, sundancer, and cedar girl. The symbols and colors reflect my deep connection to Lakota traditions. The exhibition also features a six-minute and thirty-second documentary with interviews discussing the concept of the University of the Universe. At its core, the project highlights the importance of mental health in Indigenous communities impacted by U.S. genocide and generational trauma, emphasizing the healing power of traditional ceremonies to empower individual and promote a brighter future.
